Nativity scene making

Betlemářství

Nativity scenes are among the most cherished expressions of folk creativity connected with Christmas, and the Hradec Králové Region has an exceptionally rich tradition of making them. When church nativity scenes were banned at the end of the eighteenth century, the craft moved into people's homes and was handed down from generation to generation. The mountain areas of the region became renowned centres, famous above all for carved wooden scenes, but also for paper and gingerbread ones. The Třebechovice Museum of Nativity Scenes documents and cares for this living heritage.
